Shadow of a Bull is a young adult novel by Polish-American author Maia Wojciechowska. Set in Andalusia, Spain, the novel follows twelve-year-old Manolo Olivar as he steels himself to follow in the footsteps of his late father, the renowned bullfighter Juan Olivar.   Shadow of a Bull is all about boys, and the responsibility of becoming a man. An honorable man. An honorable man. The only female character in the book is Manolo's mother, and she's pretty much a nonentity until one minor passage near the end of the story.

SHADOW OF A BULL MAIA WOJCIECHOWSKA WINNER OF THE NEWBERY MEDAL 1 When Manolo was nine he became aware of three important facts in his life. First: the older he became, the more he looked like his father. Second: he, Manolo Olivar, was a coward. Third: everyone in the town of Arcangel expected him to grow up. Spain has a long history of bull fighting. It has been the country's "national fiesta" for centuries, and it was an integral part of its culture. By setting "Shadow of a Bull" in Spain, the author underscores the importance of the Olivar family vocation to the community.
